How to make content your own and share it
Do you create your own content to share with your audience or do you share other peoples’?
If you would rather listen than read then push play below to hear how to make your own content with ease and share it
I recently asked this question in a couple of my favourite social media channels. I must admit the answers did surprise me.
But first content is and should be very personal. It’s from you for your audience. It helps them solve a problem they have. Solving it in a way that is unique from you.
When I first started out in this online world I did share a lot of other peoples information. That changed as I gained more insight into myself and what my audience wanted and need to hear from me.
Finding our way down the content sharing pathway can be challenging, especially when we take those first few steps and start to share our ideas.
I understand it can be scary thinking of what to write everyday when you go online. It can also be confronting to put your own opinion out there for the world to “judge" you
The easy thing to do is simply grab an article written by someone else. Share it. Be done with it.
However, there is so much value in you sharing your information with your audience in your own unique way
Now there are times when you may want to share someone else’s content. They may have made a great point or you feel the way they said something needed no change. So do that. Share that piece but really most of the time you want to show people who you are.
Remember there is only one you, so be you
So what is it that is actually stopping you from sharing your own content with the world?
There are often blocks that can keep surfacing to stop you from sharing your own ideas.
Any of these sound familiar?
What if no ones interested in what I have to say?
there are so many other people in my industry who are more ( insert appropriate adjective….. qualified, interesting, knowledgable comes to mind) compared to me!
But these are just our stories that we tell ourselves and are not necessarily true at all
If you look behind the scenes these people that you admire or see in your social media feed.
You will discover: maybe they have been in the industry longer than you, maybe they are at a different stage of their business to you and maybe they produce more content than you.
BUT all it truly means is they took action and started putting themselves out there consistently.
Great, now you know you have to take some action and share your voice
but now you’re thinking “what could I possibly have to share?”
You would be surprised how much you know that other people don’t. Things that you do everyday in your business that you take for granted other people have no idea about.
Think about EVERYTHING that you know about your business and what you provide.
What do people come to see you about?
What do you share with your clients every day?
It is these things that you can transfer from your head to your social media posts to your emails to your blogs.
This becomes your own content to share with your audience. It’s what they want to hear from you.
Finding your own voice
It’s true when you first start out you won’t necessarily have a lot of content of your own. It can take time to find your unique voice and message.
So when you do start, make sure you begin with things that are super simple AND easy for you to do.
- Maybe a few words on a social media post.
- Perhaps a quick video. I started doing Facebook lives because I found it so much easier and quicker to create a video than to sit down and write a blog for example. Back then the thought of writing a blog post made me feel physically ill!
- If you are creative design a meme or an infographic to share!
There are so many ways to start sharing your own content. When you are comfortable with one type of content move on to another form.
And what you talk about is totally up to you! Think again about what you would share with your ideal customers. What would help them solve their problems?
I find making the time regularly to do a brainstorming session really helps me with developing a heap of ideas to share with my clients. You can download the exact process I use here.
So back to the question asked at the beginning:
Do you create your own content to share with your audience or do you share other peoples’?
What did the majority of people who responded say they did?
The majority said they created their own content!
Most would only share other people’s content if they felt it was really relevant. If they did share other peoples it would only amount to at most 5% of their total content.
They also said they would ALWAYS cite the source, giving credit where credit is due. This is part of the know, like and trust factor.
A few tips for you to follow:
1/ DO NOT copy other peoples work.
2/ DO NOT hijack other peoples social media posts to promote yourself. This really really annoys others and makes you look bad.
3/ If you DO find a great piece of content that someone else has created and you believe would benefit your audience then do the following: discuss it, put your own opinion on it, tell people why you think it would be useful to them and then share the original link.
BE truthful. Don’t pretend that it comes from you! People have a way of finding these things out!
Develop that know, like and trust factor, because people always buy from people they know like and trust.
So step out there, be brave and start sharing your own content. Your audience is waiting for you.
