Fix your online content strategy and plan in 3 easy steps
Why your content strategy and plan may not be working and what to do instead.
It’s now March and you are 2 months into the new year. You’ve done all the right things as far as your online content is concerned.
You have your strategy. That is your big picture, of what you want your content to achieve.
You have your plan. Those day-to-day things that need to be done to implement your plan and make sure you reach your end goal.
But it’s not working as you thought.
You feel tired and uninspired and you feel like some days you simply don’t have the time and you add todays job on to tomorrow and then again and things start to feel like they’re spiralling
Sorry I know this all feels a little doom and gloom but it doesn’t have to be like that.
When this starts to happen it’s time to take a step back and look at what is happening and then make some changes.
What do you need to look for?
Here are 3 reasons why you may be failing with your online content strategy and plan
and 3 things you can do instead to get you back on track.
1/ Choosing to do too much too soon.
Also known as going from zero to hero in a week!
I have seen it often when people first start online.
get excited tostart on your new online content plan to get your message out it's exciting and you start postign every single day including weekends
then you realise you still ahve all these other thingd to do and you run out of steam
too much too soon leads to burnout , overwhelm and then youre done.
it's not sustainable to show up every single day, unless you have a team or scheduler.
What to do instead
Start slowly. Pick ONE day a week that you can post without fail for the next 90 days, then do it again.
2/ Posting on every single social media platform
Like #1 this is not sustainable either.
You CAN have an account on all the social media platforms. In fact I do recommend getting your name onto all of them. The key here is you don't have to use them all. You can even pin a post on the ones you don’t use saying “ Hey thanks for dropping by, I don’t hang out here at the moment but if you want to see what I come find me on XXX”
Ask yourself ,where are your ideal clients hanging out? Where do you like to hang out?
What to do instead:
Yep you guessed it choose ONE. Really get to know it and know it well. If you are really social media savvy maybe you can go with 2 but no more than 3 as you establish your online strategy and presence.
Need some help choosing ONE read this first.
3/ Saying too much.
Can you see a theme happening here?
When you create a piece of content it needs to have an intention. I have heard some people call it giving their content a job. I quite like that idea: What is the job that I want this piece of content to achieve?
Another way to think about it is this: What do you want to say?
When you figure out exactly what that is, the trick is not to get distracted and go down the rabbit hole of SHARING more and more information
You as a coach know so much about your area of expertise but your ideal clients don't and can get confused by too much information.
Ask yourself these questions:
What do they need to know right now?
What is the ONE thing that could help them the most with this ONE problem.
Yes, you help your clients with multiple problems but for now when creating your ONE post stick to ONE problem and keep it simple.
What to do instead:
Choose ONE problem, choose ONE solution then create ONE post.
For more information about creating your content using the above framework read thIs blog post.
That’s THREE ways to fix your online content strategy and plan, that you can do right now to improve your content strategy.
I have a bonus tip for you today that will really help with getting your content out there consistently.
Often when people start creating online content they try and do the creation, the editing and the publishing all at the same time.
Unfortunately, or fortunately, depending on how you want to look at it, your brain uses different pathways for creation and editing.
To take advantage of this make sure you set aside a time for ideas to flow and creativity to occur. Then a different time to edit it and make it look the way you want before you hit publish!
What to do instead: Book a time in your calendar to create and a different time to edit/publish your online content.
To recap 3 reasons why your online content strategy may be failing: ( and the bonus)
1/ you’re doing too much too soon
2/ you’re posting on too many platforms
3/ you’re saying too much in each piece of content
4/you’re trying to create, edit and publish all at the same time.
What to do instead
1/ Less is more, start slowly and build your presence sustainably.
2/ Choose ONE platform to focus on.
3/ Use the ONEs to give each piece of content a job
4/ Separate creation time from editing and publishing time.
The ONEs are the framework I created to use for myself and now use with my clients to create and keep a healthy presence online.
